What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you see the title?
If you are like me you thought "the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever."

But are we? Or have we somehow gotten off the path?

This book is filled with powerful reminders to stay the course.

It has insights into how to keep ourselves anchored in the gospel.

I loved the personal stories and additional quotes from Elder M. Russell Ballard's grandfathers, Hyrum Mack Smith and Melvin J. Ballard.

I was amazed at all the specific counsel that is given on how to remain faithful in such circumstances as ways to study the scriptures, how to set boundaries with friends of the opposite sex, how to protect yourself from addictions, especially pornography, and more.

I really appreciated the chapter on "Building Bridges of Understanding" where Elder Ballard explains why other faiths sometimes misunderstand our beliefs and claim that we are not "Christians."

There are even chapters on helping make our home life more enjoyable, what it means to sacrifice, what you can do to be truly happy, and how to keep an eternal perspective.

This book is definitely "timely and timeless."

A true MUST-READ book!

About the Author

M. Russell Ballard was called to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Oct. 6, 1985.

He was born to Melvin R. and Geraldine Smith Ballard. He attended the University of Utah. He served as a counselor to the president of the British Mission. He has been a bishop twice and a high councilor in two stakes. In 1974, he was called as president of the Canada Toronto Mission, where he was serving when he was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy in April of 1976. He served as a member of the Presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy from Feb. 21, 1980, to Oct. 6, 1985.

Prior to his call as a General Authority, Elder Ballard had interests in automotive, real estate, and investment businesses. He has served on many civic committees and boards. He is the author of two books.

He married Barbara Bowen in the Salt Lake Temple Aug. 28, 1951. They have two sons, five daughters and forty grandchildren.

Trina Boice grew up in California, but currently lives in Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked as a Legislative Assistant for a Congressman in Washington D.C., and was given the “Points of Light” Award and Presidential Volunteer Service Award for her domestic and international community service. She wrote a column called “The Boice Box” for a newspaper in Georgia, where she lived for 15 years. Boyd K. Packer, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has been a member of that quorum since 1970 and a General Authority since 1961. Immediately prior to that, he was the supervisor of seminaries and institutes for the Church. He is a former president of the New England States Mission.

President Packer was born in Brigham City, Utah. He served as a pilot in the United States Air Force during World War II and later obtained his doctorate in education from Brigham Young University. In speaking personally to Eric Huntsman about this book he told me he wrote it to help people realize that while the Lord might not give them the miracles they are specifically hoping for He is still giving them miracles.

As you read of Christ's miracles you might see a parallel to the miracle you are praying for.

"Restoring a paralytic's ability to walk or a man's ability to use a previously withered hand can represent the strengthening and enabling power of the Atonement as well as anticipating the full healing of the resurrection.

Cleansing a leper symbolizes the redeeming power of Jesus' sacrifice that can purify our heart and souls. 

Returning the ability to see and hear symbolizes the deeper meaning of opening our spiritual eyes to see things as they are and opening our ears to hear the word of the Lord."

Healing of the sick is probably the most commonly acknowledged miracle today...

About the Author

Eric D. Huntsman is an associate professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, where he serves as the coordinator of the Ancient Near Eastern Studies program in the Kennedy Center for International Studies and is affiliated with the Classics program. After graduating fromBYU in classical Greek and Latin, he earned a Ph.D. in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the BYUfaculty in 1994.

The author of the acclaimed God So Loved the World: The Final Days of the Savior’s Life andGood Tidings of Great Joy: An Advent Celebration of the Savior’s Birth, both from Deseret Book, Dr. Huntsman has also published numerous articles on the New Testament and the writings of John.

He served as a full-time missionary in the Thailand Bangkok Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and as a bishop in Provo, Utah. This book is ONE OF THE BEST!

I LOVE the caption on the front cover:

"The body of Christ needs its full complement of members--

the devout, the wayward, the uncomfortable, the struggling."

Do you feel as if you fit into one of those descriptions? 

But as the jacket says "Questioning is not the problem, after all, the restoration unfolded because a young man asked questions."

Difficulties within the body of the Saints "arise when questions are based on flawed assumptions or incorrect perceptions."

SO MANY amazing thoughts and ideas are contained within these pages...

I will give you a few that really stood out to me:

"The Atonement is not a backup plan in case we happen to fall short in the process; it is the ordained means whereby we gradually become complete and whole."

"We know more than we think, even if we know less than we would like."

"We know that the main purpose of Sabbath observance is to partake of the Lord's Supper. But we sometimes grow frustrated with all the peripherals....What if we saw lessons and talks as connections to the sacrament rather than as unrelated secondary activities?

The Lost Teachings of Jesus on the Sacred Place of Women

"The Old Testament and the New Testament make reference to scriptural texts that apparently were authoritative within the Church during the fist century but are not in our Bible today. Even the Book of Mormon suggests that scriptural texts have been lost or gone unrecorded. In the book of Ether we learn that Moroni did not include 'the hundredth part'."

So could it be possible that a Russian journalist, Nicholas Notovitch, found an ancient text spoken by Jesus and hid over the centuries in a Tibetan Buddhist monastery?

I believe it can~

The text tells about the sacred place of women.

And then Alonzo Gaskill has added summaries, insights, and teachings from modern-day Church leaders.

Here is a very small sample~

Verse Sixteen states:

"The wife and the mother are inappreciable treasures given unto you by God. They are the fairest ornaments of existence, and of them shall be born all the inhabitants of the world."

Summary~
"Jesus reminds each of us that women have a divine gift--that of creating life."

Counsel to Men~
"A man who treats poorly his wife, mother, or any other woman makes a loud, declarative statement about his true feeling toward the 'fairer sex.'"

Counsel to Women~
"Sometimes women are unrecognizable as treasure because the men in their lives are inattentive or ungrateful. Sometimes, however, they are inappreciable as treasure because they choose to do so little for their husbands or sons that they manifest no treasurable attributes."

Here is another very small sample~

Verse Nineteen states:

"Here [through the women in your life] you will forget your sorrows and your failures, and you will recover the lost energy necessary to enable you to help your neighbor."

Summary~
"The best of lives still encounter opposition...But through the love and interaction of a good wife or mother, a boy or man can overcome these trials."

Counsel to Men & Children~
"The Lord...encourages His sons, in their dark hours, to turn to the wives and mothers in their lives. In a man's hour of desperation or despair, a good woman can often help him to see things 'as they really are.'"

Counsel to Women~
"Helaman's two thousand strippling warriors (said) 'We do not doubt our mothers knew it.' Such is the influence of a good woman upon her sons and husband.

"President Spencer W. Kimball stated, 

'There can be no heaven without righteous women.'"

This book reminds us of the need to put women back into their sacred place.

Dr. Alonzo L. Gaskill was reared near Indepence, Missouri, and joined the Church in the fall of 1984. One year later, he served a mission to England. He has attended several schools and universities, earning a master’s degree in theology and a Ph.D. in biblical studies.

He has taught graduate and undergraduate religious education courses at the University of California (at both Berkeley and Santa Cruz) and Idaho State University. He was the director of the LDS institute of religion adjacent to Stanford University, and is an assistant professor of Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. Elder Gerald N. Lund received his B.A. and M.S. degrees in sociology from Brigham Young University. He also did extensive graduate work in New Testament studies at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, California, and studies Hebrew at the University of Judaism in Hollywood, California.

During his thirty-five years in the Church Educational System, the author served as a seminary teacher, an institute teacher and director, a curriculum writer, director of college curriculum, and zone administrator. About the Author
Trina Bates Boice grew up in sunny California with her twin sister and even won 1st place in a Twin's Contest when they were 12 years old! She also has an older sister
and a younger brother.

Trina earned two Bachelor’s degrees (International Relations & Spanish) from Brigham Young University.

While at BYU, she competed on the Speech and Debate team and the Ballroom Dance Team, winning national titles. She was President of the National Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma, and served as ASBYU Secretary of Student Community Services. Trina currently serves on the BYU Alumni Board Las Vegas Chapter and the BYU Alumni Outreach Board. She currently teaches as an online instructor for BYU-I.

Trina also studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain, and later returned there to serve an LDS mission in Madrid. She also earned 2 Master’s degrees from California College for Health Sciences (Health Administration & Community Wellness Promotion) and received the Bernard M. Baruch Award from the Congress of Rehabilitative Medicine.

She worked as a Legislative Assistant for a Congressman in Washington D.C. and wrote a column called “The Boice Box” for a newspaper in Georgia, where she lived for 15 years. She has a Real Estate license, Travel Agent's license, a Ham Radio Technician's license (Ki6GZG), and a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. If she told you what she really did every day, she'd have to kill you.

Trina recently moved to Las Vegas with her husband, Tom, and their four wonderful sons: Cooper, Calvin, Bradley, and Bowen. Even the family's dog, birds, and water turtle are all male! With that much testosterone in the house, Trina was destined to be involved with the Boy Scouts of America, and she received the "Godsend Award" in 2001 for all of her service. She is very proud of all her Eagle Scout sons!

In 2004, Trina was named "Honor Young Mother of The Year" for the state of California by American Mothers, Inc! Her kids are still laughing about that one.

In 2004, Trina was also named as President George W. Bush's "Points of Light Volunteer" for her domestic and international service projects.
