About the Author

Clair M. Poulson was born and raised in Duchesne, Utah. His father was a rancher and farmer, his mother a librarian. Clair has always been an avid reader, having found his love for books as a very young boy.

He has served for forty years in the criminal justice system. Twenty years were spent in law enforcement, ending his police career with eight years as the Duchesne County Sheriff. For the past twenty years Clair has worked as a justice court judge for Duchesne County. Clair is also a veteran of the US Army where he was a military policeman. He has served on various boards and councils during his professional career, including the Justice Court Board of Judges, Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, Utah Judicial Council, Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, an FBI advisory board and others.

In addition to his criminal justice work, Clair has farmed and ranched all of his life. He has raised many kinds of animals, but his greatest interest is horses.

Clair has served in many capacities in the LDS church, including fulltime missionary (California Mission) bishop, counselor to bishop, young men president, high councilor, stake mission president, scoutmaster, High Priest group leader, etc. He currently serves as a Sunday School teacher.

Clair is married to Ruth, and together, they have five children, all of whom are married: Alan (Vicena) Poulson, Kelly Ann (Wade) Hatch, Amanda (Ben) Semadeni, Wade (Brooke) Poulson, and Mary (Tyler) Hicken. Between them they have twenty-three children. Clair and Ruth met while both were students at Snow College and were married in the Manti temple.

Clair has always loved telling his children, and later his grandchildren, make-up stories. His vast experience in life and his love of literature has always contributed to both his telling stories to children and his writing of adventure and suspense novels.

About the Author

I was raised on a farm surrounded by the rolling hills of southern Idaho and have made my home in southern Utah among the beautiful red mountains and desert heat. I have been happily married for 42 years and am the mother of six daughters and have five wonderful grandchildren .

After my family began to leave the nest, I decided it was time to finish what I had started long ago. I decided to go back to college and get a degree. It had been 30 years since I had been to college and it was one of the most frightening things I had ever done. I had to learn how to study and take tests all over again. The first day of college, I was a nervous wreck and wondered if I could do this, but with the support of my husband and children I was able to graduate. I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre and Music at Southern Utah University and received the Outstanding Non-Traditional Student Award for the College of Performing Arts in 2002. During the meantime, I cut a CD named "Romantic Love Songs of Sigmund Romberg and Victor Herbert."

I have enjoyed writing short stories and novels for several years but it took a lot of courage to begin submitting them. After "Melinda and the Wild West" was published, I entered it in the Reader Views Literary Contest and my book was chosen as a Semi-Finalist in the "Reviewers Choice Awards 2007." It was one of the top ten out of hundreds of other entries. I have written eleven books; five are historical sweet romances and four are mystery adventures. I also have two non-fiction e-books.

I travel throughout the United States, teaching people to write their family history and autobiography. I have traveled to seventeen states and given over 400 workshops. I am the author of six historical sweet romances, four mystery adventure novels, a children's book, and a new cozy mystery series. All of my books are family friendly.

Josi you have written an AMAZING series and many people have fallen in love with Sadie. Will you please answer a few questions about the series for us~

What is your favorite Sadie moment and from which book?
Probably the epilogue from Wedding Cake. I wrote it just after Fortune Cookie, before I even had the story together for Wedding Cake. I don't want to give it away, but I chuckled and chuckled to myself as I put together Sadie's plan for the future.

What is your favorite Sadie location and from which book?
Probably Portland. I had driven through that city for the first time after I wrote English Trifle and knew I wanted to write a book there. After Blackberry Crumble was done I was able to take my family there for a visit and it was a really fun trip. It's a beautiful place with quirky details that I loved; little aspects of culture that were so interesting to me. I keep telling my husband that it's somewhere I could live if he ever decides he wants a change of scenery.

What is your favorite recipe and from which book?
A lot of the recipes in the books are favorites of mine that I have made for years and was able to work into a story, a lot of other ones were provided from my test kitchen over the years. It's hard to choose just one so I'll point out a few :-) The Devil's Food Cake is a recipe from my maternal grandmother that my mom made all my life and I have made over and over again. It is my go-to chocolate cake recipe. The recipe I make the most is the pancakes from Pumpkin Roll--it's one I developed myself from a variety of other pancake recipes and the reason that I always have buttermilk in my fridge. I absolutely love the Lemon Tea Cookies from English Trifle as well as the Crumpets from that book too. I could go on and on--there isn't a single recipe in the entire series that I don't like and I make many of them on a regular basis. I'm so excited to have the cookbook so that I don't have to use the printed off PDFs any more :-)

What is your favorite book cover?
My favorite cover is Fortune Cookie. I love the crispness and the black and red contrasts--it feels very mysterious to me and it was love at first sight!

Which scene was the hardest to write and why and from what book?
The final scene in Wedding Cake was the hardest scene for me to write. It did not happen originally the way it happened in the book, but even then there was so much going on, so many people, such a need for solid setting and realism. I spent a lot of time on that scene, and then had some major revisions to do after my editor looked at it. I need it to move fast but be clear--and it was the LAST scene of the whole series so it was really important that I get it right.

Which book was the easiest to write and why and from what book?
I suppose the easiest book was Baked Alaska. My husband and I were able to take an Alaskan cruise and I did a ton of brainstorming on the trip to plan out the story. It had it's own challenges in that it was such a "closed" set but that also gave me the chance to work in a lot of details that I don't usually have access too. It was a lot of fun to be feel as though I was right where the story would take place.

Anything else you want to share with us about this amazing series that we so love?
Just that I'm so glad so many people have enjoyed Sadie with me. I did not intend it to be a series at all when I wrote the first book, and then it went from two to three to five to seven to ten and finally to twelve. The ONLY reason I was able to make a 12 book series is because readers loved Sadie and wanted more. There are no words to properly communicate how validating it is to know that so many people took this journey with me and enjoyed Sadie so much. I will forever be grateful for this experience and owe it to the readers who made it happen.

About the Author
I was born and raised in a small farming town in Idaho and I’m a dirt between the toes, irrigation boot-wearing, ponytail flipping in the wind as I drive the 4-wheeler FARM girl all the way!

I’m married to my incredible husband, Steve, and we have four wonderful kids–two girls and two boys with one more on the way.

I graduated from Utah State University with a bachelor’s in Psychology and a minor in music. Go Aggies! I love USU–that’s where I met my husband!

I enjoy so much of life–there’s so much to learn and experience. I love reading almost any genre/age group and usually read over 50 books a year from a variety of different authors. I love running, gardening, making cards with rubber stamps, crocheting, playing volleyball, singing, playing the piano,and cooking.

I’ve enjoyed writing for as long as I can remember. As a child, I loved to make up poems and write short stories.I loved daydreaming and writing stories in my head--always carrying on some narrative with a character when I was working in the fields. I used to wish that I could be a cat and sleep in the sun so I wouldn't have to weed the garden. Still sounds kind of nice sometimes!

A few interesting tidbits:

I started a cleaning business after I graduated from college and with my crew, we’d clean 80 college apartments from top to the grimy bottom in 9 days.

I finished my first novel–a middle-grade reader in 2001. I learned a lot from writing that book (which is tucked safely in a drawer) and it set me on a path to gain all the knowledge I could to be a successful writer. -

Josi S. Kilpack hated to read until her mother handed her a copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pond when she was 13. From that day forward, she read everything she could get her hands on and accredits her writing “education” to the many novels she has “studied” since then. She began writing her first novel in 1998 and never stopped. Her novel, Sheep’s Clothing won the Whitney Award 2007 for Mystery/Suspense.
