Peace Be Still w/ eBook Giveaway

Author: David S. Baxter
Release Date: October 2013
Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc.
Genre: Inspiration

I LOVE the opening statement of this book

It seems to me that we have increasingly created life conditions in a world in which it is difficult to simply 'be still.' Instead, we have a world that is furiously fast, balefully busy, and numbingly noisy. We barely have a moment to spare; every minute has to be filled with something--anything.

And so it is!
Everyday we yearn for peace as we rush from one activity to another and from one noise to another.

We must learn to "be still" in order to find that peace we are so desperately seeking.

This book has some great, great counsel on how to find that peace we want.

You will learn how to listen to the still, small voice.

You will learn how to help achieve world, home and personal peace.

You will learn how to have peace through forgiveness.

You will learn how to have peace amidst adversities.

You will learn how to trust in the Prince of Peace.

Personal and scriptural stories help illustrate ways in which we can attain peace.

Beautifully written!
Much to ponder!
We CAN have peace in our lives!

One of the things I love most about hearing President Thomas S. Monson speak is the experiences he shares.

Now 50 of those beloved TRUE accounts have been brought together in this beautifully illustrated book.

True, personal experiences of love and devotion and faith.

Encounters that will warm your heart and give you a greater desire to be more like the Savior.

Some of these experiences you might be hearing for the first time and some you will remember hearing in a General Conference or other meetings.

But as you read you will definitely hear President Monson's voice in your head and rejoice in the spirit that each account brings.

Re-read the telling of the pigeons, or the baseballs, or the stick of gum.

About the Author
President Thomas S. Monson was set apart as the sixteenth President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in February 2008. He had previously served for twenty-two years in the First Presidency of the Church, after having been a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since October1963.

Five years after his call to the Twelve, he was given a special assignment for the work of the Church in Europe, requiring many visits with members behind the Iron Curtain. He was instrumental in the construction of the Freiberg Germany Temple and in advancing the Lord’s work in other eastern European countries that were part of the communist bloc.

He also served as chairman of the Scriptures Publication Committee and supervised the process that resulted in the new editions of the scriptures.

His ministry has been characterized by his compassion for the needs of individuals and his gift for one-on-one service.

President Monson and his wife, Frances, are the parents of three children, grandparents of eight, and great-grandparents of eight.

President Monson knows how to share an experience to bring across a specific point. Now LDS Living Magazine has put together 5 ways in which you can bring experiences to life
in your teaching methods:

1. Use a true experience. The spirit testifies of truth, so beginning with a true story is always best. True stories are more powerful and relevant to your audience. Remember that President Monson often tells stories from the lives of other people, so if you don’t have a relevant experience, look for another’s. One great resource is a collection of 50 stories President Monson himself has shared during his 50 years as an apostle, available September 27: Consider the Blessings: True Accounts of God’s Hand in Our Lives.

2. Ask, “How does this experience illustrate my main message?” If you’re speaking on tithing and the story you want to tell is about prayer, forcing a connection can confuse your listeners. The more on-point your story is, the easier it will be to explain and fit in to the rest of your talk. Never will you find an irrelevant or tangential story in any of President Monson’s addresses.

3. Keep it short and sweet. A single story should not comprise the majority of your talk. Even though most people are naturally interested in narratives, if a story’s too long, their attention will wander, and they will wonder what the point is. Remember your purpose and cut any details that don’t directly support that message. President Monson often does this by using phrases like, “tears were shed,” or even simply, “time passed,” to gloss over unnecessary details.

4. Specify and then repeat the moral. If you’re speaking to a room of 300 people, there will be 300 different interpretations about what your story meant. Specify your intended message very clearly. Do this often. Preface your story by stating what it is designed to illustrate, and end by restating this purpose. In one example, President Monson started by sharing, “We need God’s divine help. I testify that His help is but a prayer away.” A personal experience about the power of prayer followed, capped off by the moral, “Once more I felt the resolve to provide place for prayer.”

5. Connect your experience to scriptures. To really drive your message home, finish your story by relating it to scripture. This takes your story from a fun recollection to a doctrine-based example. To transition from a  story to a scripture, President Monson uses phrases like, “the words of the Savior come to mind,” or “I reflected on the message of the master, recorded in John 8:12.”

Try adding a story to your next talk. Don’t worry if you’re not master storyteller like President Monson; nobody expects brilliant oratory from a sacrament meeting talk. Instead, remember that a well-told story can illustrate your point and help the congregation remember what you’re teaching more easily. This makes you a more engaging speaker, and more importantly, a better conduit for the spirit.

Author: Emily Freeman
Release Date: August 2013
Publisher: Deseret Book
Genre: Inspiration

Emily Freeman is one of my most favorite scriptural authors.

She has a way of explaining scriptures and helping me see how they apply to my life right now that resonates within my heart.

I know that she has personally gone through some very trying times and it is through those times that she turned to the Lord and to the scriptures and gained the insight she has.

How blessed we are that she is willing to share that knowledge and love with us.

All of us have challenges, trials and adversity!

We may "face obstacles, danger, oppression, and injustice."

There will be times of sadness, anger, fear, and despair.

Of one thing we can be sure...the Lord will deliver us!

We can learn to trust in the Lord like Gideon, Nehemiah, Hezekiah, Micah, and Moses and others from the Old Testament.

We can "draw strength" and courage from their stories that are found and explained in this amazingly wonderful book!

We can have the love of the Lord "written on our hearts"

This book is a treasure to be studied and pondered especially as we study the Old Testament in Sunday School next year.

This book will help you find your deliverance!

PERFECT for the holidays!
OH. SO. VERY. VERY. GOOD!

About the Author
Award-winning author Carla Kelly is a veteran of the New York and international publishing world. The author of more than thirty novels and novellas for Donald I. Fine Co., Signet, and Harlequin, Carla is the recipient of two Rita Awards (think Oscars for romance writing) from Romance Writers of America and two Spur Awards (think Oscars for western fiction) from Western Writers of America.

Recently, she’s been writing Regency romances (think Pride and Prejudice) set in the Royal Navy’s Channel Fleet during the Napoleonic Wars between England and France. She comes by her love of the ocean from her childhood as a Navy brat.
Carla’s history background makes her no stranger to footnote work, either. During her National Park Service days at the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, Carla edited Friedrich Kurz’s fur trade journal. She recently completed a short history of Fort Buford, where Sitting Bull surrendered in 1881.

Following the “dumb luck” principle that has guided their lives, the Kellys recently moved to Wellington, Utah, from North Dakota and couldn’t be happier in their new location. In her spare time, Carla volunteers at the Railroad and Mining Museum in Helper, Utah. She likes to visit her five children, who live here and there around the United States. Her favorite place in Utah is Manti, located after a drive on the scenic byway through Huntington Canyon.

And why is she so happy these days? Carla is enjoying writing for an LDS audience now, where she feels most at home.

Jeweler's Apprentice

Book Details
Author: E. Kaiser
Release Date: December 2011
Publisher: Hearth Books
Genre: YA Fiction

"Jeweler's Apprentice, is a light-fantasy adventure for teens. The shy, bookish heroine is thrust out on the first step toward the adventure that awaits, and growing up."

That's growing up for you. Things are never the same again, and that part always hurts, Fia. Don't try to think it shouldn't. Every time something changes, something hurts. It's the natural way of things. But there are parts that are good about it too. It is right to grieve for things you've lost, or given up. But remember even when it's hard that it's not all sad.

And that is what happens to Fia. She is growing up...but she is also starting a grand adventure.

After she stumbles upon a secret she is whisked off to become the jeweler's apprentice and just as she is getting the hang of it she is sent on a rescue mission where she will tangle with strangers, thieves, and all sorts of dangers.

But she will also find heroes and royalty and family who was once thought of as lost.

Yes, growing up can be hard, but it can be wonderful too.

One of my favorite passages:

You spend too much time here. Too much strain on your nerves. You need fresh air, get out and get some exercise. Clean your thoughts out and free up your mind...Get up then! Come along...Learn too fast and you'll not learn well.

A WONDERFUL BOOK!
A FUN, FUN READ!

About the Author
E. Kaiser was born into a family of readers, and got started on storytelling around the age of four when her older siblings prompted her into recounting an absolutely ridiculous account of a parallel childhood. It was good for the family's general entertainment, and she discovered the thrill of making people laugh. At the age of seven her mother read the Hobbit aloud, and a fascination with beautiful fantasy was born. At nine she came to the decision that she wanted to be a writer, and set to reading rabidly to learn the art. At thirteen she attempted her first novel, and it was eaten in a computer's demise.
Afterward, during her teenage years she tried very hard at various times to stop writing all together.

Not succeeding, she at last gave in to her addiction, and wrote "for fun".

About the Author
I realize that I am one of those rare people in the world who gets to live a life full of passion, romance, suspense, angst, fulfillment, humor, and mystery. I am a writer. Every day when I sit down at my computer, I enter into a world of my own making. I am in the head of a panoply of characters ranging from a nineteen-year-old Austrian debutante (The Last Waltz) to a raging psychopath (The Arthurian Omen) and four women at once in The Only Way to Paradise. Then there are the feisty heroines of my Regency romances . . .

I am a traditionally published,award-winning, best-selling writer who has recently gone Indie. I enjoy genre-hopping, having published a genealogical mystery series, two women’s fiction novels, an historical epic, two suspense novels, five Regency romances, and a couple of non-fiction offerings.
With a BA from Stanford and an MA from George Washington University in International Relations, I somehow stumbled into finance. But, once my husband was through law school, I never wanted to do anything but write and raise kids. Now the kids are gone, but (even better) there are four grandchildren who provide my rewards for finishing a manuscript.

Aside from the grandchildren, my favorite things include: Florence, Italy; snow storms; Oreos; real hot chocolate; sweaters; Sundance Resort; lilacs; and dachshunds.

About the Author
I am the mother of seven children, age ten and under. They are adorable and they bring light to my life. Writing is what keeps me sane.

TEN FUN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SARAH
1) I make my own sushi. Because I'm addicted to it and live in Idaho.

2) I have seven (soon to be 8 children) and they drive me CRAZY! And make me HAPPY. Two of them are adopted from Ethiopia.

3) I love to cook international food. I'm pretty good at Indian and Ethiopian food. Most of my kids love anything spicy.

4) I get really shy at book signings. Sometimes I feel like I'm just shoving bookmarks in peoples' hands for no reason. But I actually do really like people.

5) I love fishing but have never caught a keep-able fish in my life.

6) I love board and card games but I think I can count the number of times I've won on one hand.

7) I have lived in Idaho and Utah, but I grew up in California, right around the area where my ancestors settled. I'm actually an 8th generation Californian, and I have a great grandfather whose nickname was "wild bill." (not Hickok, another Wild Bill. There were probably a lot of them...)

8) One of my far-fetched dreams is to buy an old building in town, refurbish it, make it into a stage/auditorium and start a small acting company. Completely far-fetched because I can'tact to save myself, and I have never directed in my life.

9) My husband is a fantastic dancer. Was on a university team for five years. Every wife's dream, right? However, I can't dance to save myself... (fully plan on learning, however. Once my last baby is old enough to be home long enough for us to be gone long enough to take lessons.)

10) I love my family! They're big and often disorganized and our house is sometimes not too tidy, but I wouldn't trade a single one of them for anything.

Excerpt
Natasha sighed. “You don’t need to stay until Detective Bentley comes.” His eyebrows rose. “You want to be alone with the detective?” Natasha grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with water from the door of the fridge. “I just don’t want Jace and Lily to wait too long.” She turned to face him, taking a sip of the cold water. Tony held her gaze with his warm stare and edged a step closer. “I wanted to make sure that you’re okay.” “I’m fine.” Natasha clutched the glass in her palm. “I can take care of myself.” Why was she lying to him? She tried to shoo him away, when she really wanted to beg him to stay until Alex was apprehended and maybe even after that. Tony set the water bottles on the counter. “Oh, I don’t doubt you can take care of yourself, but maybe it’s time to let someone else help.” He took two more steps toward her. She could smell his PS cologne. She’d given him a bottle the first year they were married and told him it was her favorite scent. The fragrance brought back tender memories she wanted to displace and plugging her nose right now might be a little awkward. Natasha raised the glass to her lips to try to block the tempting aroma and create some distance between them. Why was Tony still wearing the same brand? “What if I want to take care of you?” Tony asked. Sounds wonderful. She took a long drink, but it didn’t quench the heat in her face. Tony took the glass from her fingers and set it on the counter. “What if I want to take care of you?” he repeated quietly. He gently took hold of her palm and studied her face for the correct answer. “I think you’re too late,” Natasha whispered, studying his pressed cotton shirt to avoid his handsome face. Her hand tingled. How could he still affect her like this? Tony tilted her chin up with his free hand. “Look in my eyes and say that again.”

DID YOU KNOW?
The Whitneys are an awards program for novels written by LDS authors. Elder Orson F. Whitney, an early apostle in the LDS church, prophesied “We will yet have Miltons and Shakespeares of our own.” It is our hope to be a part of that journey toward excellence by honoring the LDS writers also working toward that goal.
The Whitney Awards honor novels in the following categories: General Fiction, Romance, Suspense/Mystery, Speculative Fiction, Speculative Young Adult Fiction, General Young Adult Fiction, Middle Grade, Historical, Best Novel of the Year, Best Novel in Youth Fiction, and Best Novel by a New Author.
Novels can be nominated by any reader (HERE), and nominees are voted on by an academy of industry professionals, including authors, publishers, bookstore owners, distributors, critics, and others.
