WILL MY CHILD BE READY?
by Emily Freeman and Merrilee Boyack

Mothers have an immeasurable influence and a significant responsibility in raising up young men and women who are prepared to further the work of the Lord.

A missionary's training does not begin when he or she enters the doors of the MTC. Well before that, each missionary's mother can begin laying the ground work that will prepare her child to diligently and wholeheartedly serve the Lord and His children.

This unique resource includes 12 training chapters for moms of prospective missionaries, all written by mothers who have sent children on missions (and some by mothers who have also served as mission presidents wives).

Whether you have young children and are hoping to begin the mission training process early or you have less than a year to pull all the pieces together, here is the good news: the path of preparing a child for a mission begins wherever you are.

Chapters on topics such as...

*fostering good daily habits
*developing relationship skills
*being resilient
*and recognizing the Spirit

...shed light on what future missionaries need to know, what they need to do, and what they need to be.

Excerpt
You are about to immerse yourself in a book focused on training up a missionary for the Lord. But before we jump in, it is important to pause and consider one of the most important factors in that training--you.

Your efforts will be combined with the efforts of bishops, youth leaders, seminary teachers, family, and friends. However, next to the Spirit, you and your spouse will play one of the most crucial roles.

Because of that, this introduction is dedicated to you. Your influence is immeasurable. Your errand is divine, Your responsibility is significant...

...One thing is certain--in order to raise Stripling Warriors we must become Stripling Mothers.

We must live by the spiritual habits, behaviors, and principles we want our children to live by. Every day. That way, when our children encounter moments of doubt, which they surely will, they will be able to look to us as mothers and remember what we know to be true.

My Favorite Quote:

"If we were never uncomfortable there would be no need for a Comforter.
We must take a step into the dark, make ourselves uncomfortable in the Lord's work, and we will feel the Spirit and the Holy Ghost will support us."

My Review
I LOVE books like these! This one is subtitled "missionary prep for moms."

And that is exactly what it is! Giving you information... to use a little or use a lot... in teaching your child to be ready to serve a mission.

Want to help you child know how and why we need to be obedient? It's in here..
Want to help your child know about self-mastery and sacrifice? It's in here...

And so is goal setting, and finding a balance in your daily activities, and learning to serve, and how to develop Christlike attributes, and preparing to attend the temple, and so much more!

Amazing thoughts, scriptures, suggestions, stories and examples!

I SO LOVE the "what they need to know" and "what they need to do" and "what they need to be" sections at the end of each chapter.

This book is PERFECT for helping a missionary gather the emotional, social, physical, and mental tools they will need...even prospective Senior missionaries could benefit from this book!

It is also a PERFECT book to study if you simply want to become a more effective disciple of our Lord.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

LOVE ON A WHIM
by Aubrey Mace

Six months out of law school, Rachel Pearce is completely disillusioned by her job hunt. Despite pounding the pavement with her Ivy League degree in hand, her job prospects are no brighter than the day she graduated. Then in a chance meeting with a former acquaintance, eccentric young millionaire Henry Walker, Rachel finds an unexpected opportunity: Henry is looking for a personal secretary. Swallowing her pride, Rachel sets aside her law firm aspirations for what she envisions as secretarial work—mountains of paperwork and filing. But when she finds her most demanding duty to be daily cookie runs for her new boss, she’s baffled by her unconventional job responsibilities.

As she’s pulled into Henry’s delightful whims, caught in a whirlwind of private jets and fancy dinners, Rachel finds herself inexplicably drawn to this handsome and charismatic man. But reality always has a way of intruding, and logic tells her that this adventure can’t last. When real life inevitably comes calling, Rachel must decide if she’s willing to trade in her dream of success in the courtroom for a chance at love.

WILLA THE WOLF
HAS SHOW AND TELL
by Leela Hope

Do your kids have a favorite toy?
Do they understand the value of family?

Willa the wolf is having trouble deciding what she should bring into her class for show and tell.
She lines up all her toys and tries to pick out the thing that means the most to her.

She asks her mother, father, and brother for help.

While she is trying to pick a toy that means something to her she realizes that there are more important things than toys in her life.

A great read for the whole family.

Told through gorgeous illustrations and flowing verse it is perfect for kids 0-5.

Annette Lyon Collection
(A Timeless Romance Anthology Book 12)

The ANNETTE LYON COLLECTION contains brand new contemporary romance novella OUR SONG, as well five hand-picked readers’ and reviewers’ favorites of Annette’s popular Timeless Romance Anthology novellas. Readers will love this selection of three contemporary and three historical romance novellas.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In OUR SONG, a charming romance novella, Cassie and Matt have been dating in the Yellowstone area for two years, and things are, well, average. When Cassie meets up with two college friends who are visiting, their love lives like sound like fairy tales: rose petals, chocolates, candles on the beach… Cassie goes home feeling like she’s missing out. After all, repeatedly watching Old Faithful erupt and walking through sulfur-smelling gases at Fountain Paint Pot don’t exactly say “romance.” Maybe things with Matt aren’t going anywhere, and it’s time to move on. Then she discovers that perception and reality are completely different things. Now she can only hope it isn’t too late to show Matt how much she really cares. I cannot even begin to tell you have amazingly wonderful this story is! Filled with love and envy, confusion and hope...this story reminds you to look for the good that is in your life instead of always comparing what others have. Sweet, sweet ending! I SO LOVED this one!
In the sweet novella GOLDEN SUNRISE, Natalie takes time out of her crazy schedule to fly to Vegas for her best friend’s wedding. Sierra and Jason, high-school sweethearts, are finally getting married. Fortunately for Natalie, her old high-school flame, Adam, has a work commitment and can’t be there as best man. But when she arrives at the wedding rehearsal—late and ragged—Adam is there. When Adam makes a wild suggestion, Natalie just may take him up on it, even though she knows he’s moved on. A single choice may mean Natalie is taking a shot at reclaiming the past—or that she's putting her heart in harm’s way a second time. I absolutely LOVED this one! Loved that it was set at a wedding! What a great story to have the high school 4-some come together after all these years. LOVED the wild suggestion that Adam comes up with--I won't give it away :) A WONDERFUL read!
FIRSTS AND LASTS, an enchanting novella, begins with Dani’s last week in New York. She’s failed in her dreams to catch a break as an actress and is now ready to return home and dust herself off. As she visits the places on her final to-see list, she meets Mark, another New York City transplant with big dreams. Except Mark hasn’t given up on his. As they spend the day together, Dani realizes that even though she hasn’t hit the “big time” she might be living her dream after all. Only problem: she has a one-way ticket back home. Another FANTASTIC story! I LOVED how quickly these two found companionship with each other and the scene where they are busking in the park--I so wish I had been there to witness that :) Isn't it amazing what a good partner can help you achieve or endure! LOVE THIS ONE! I so need to visit New York one day!
In the compelling novella WAR OF HEARTS, Anna, a journalist, is desperate to escape the magazine where Pete, her now-former boyfriend, also works. Heartbroken and still in love with him, Anna snags an assignment to cover the Winter War in Finland. She arrives at a snowy Finnish battlefront only to discover that Pete is already there—as her photographer. She’s determined to be professional about the situation until a battle breaks out in camp, putting her and Pete in harm’s way and putting their love to the test. WOW! What a tale! This one will keep you spellbound as the characters must once again work together after a breakup--a difficult task in any circumstance--but to also be in a war zone--wow! You won't be able to put this one down! Gripping, enthralling, so good!
The captivating novella BETWEEN THE LINES follows Jane Martin, who is intelligent but extremely shy, especially around men. When the Aid and Cultural Society proposes a letter-writing program, Jane signs up, hoping she can find true friendship. The program doesn’t run as smoothly as expected, and unknown to Jane, one of the men in her city becomes her writing friend. Thomas Allred has always known shy and quiet Jane, but reading her letters written to his secret persona, opens his eyes to what an amazing woman she is. The only trouble is, Jane doesn’t know that the man who she is falling in love with through letters is also Thomas, the man who is falling in love with her in person. Every story in this book is FANTASTIC! I think this one is my favorite! I have been know to "romanticize" things by dreaming about them in a "better than life way" and I feel that I am a close kindred spirit to Jane and Thomas :) LOVED the letter writing! A sweet, sweet read! You won't be able to put this one down!
In the charming novella A TASTE OF HOME, we meet Claire Jennings, who’s on her way to spend Christmas with her family. As she rides the train with William Rhodes, who grew up across the street, memories of Christmases past flood her mind. He may be twenty-one now, but she can’t forget his torturous teasing from their school years. At the rail station, Claire discovers that her home is under quarantine because her little brother has measles. She's stuck in town, away from her family, on her favorite holiday. William stays behind with her, and as Christmas Day approaches and her homesickness deepens, she discovers that perhaps he has changed in more ways than one. Any story with a Christmas theme is a favorite story of mine! One of the greatest things about Christmas is going home and being with family so my heart aches to know that a quarantine kept Claire from her family at this special time of year. But just like a romantic knight-in-shining-armor William steps in to make this Christmas a most cherished one. What a FUN story! SO. LOVED. IT!
My Over-All Review
I LOVE books like this!
Short, sweet stories--giving you a chance to read quickly--or longly as the case may be :) Take a few minutes to relax and leave your world behind and look into the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Read one chapter at a time or skip around or read from cover to cover. This is your book to discover the feelings of fun love. But I warn you--you will not want to put it down! What a great tribute to Annette Lyon's writing!
A MUST-READ!
THE KNIGHTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Joan Holub
illustrator - Scott Magoon
'Twas December 24th, and three brave knights were just settling in for the night when out on the drawbridge, there arose such a clatter! The knights try everything to get rid of this unknown invader (Santa Claus!), a red and white knight with a fleet of dragons . . .
But nothing would stop
their white-whiskered foe.
No matter their efforts,
he just would not go!
This parody of Clement Clarke Moore's well-known poem 'Twas the Night Before Christmas is kid-friendly, clever, and just plain silly--sure to become a holiday classic of a different kind.
BEAUTY FOR ASHES
by Scott Livingston
Of the many tests that make up mortality, how we respond to the ones that occur in our human interactions and relationships will largely determine our happiness in the life to come.
Daily oppositions are unavoidable and can be a painful test of our determination to rise above hurt or offense.
But learning to love our enemies—to do good to those who hate us or despitefully use us—is easier said than done. It takes a change of heart and a reliance on the Savior’s perfect example of love and forgiveness.
With incredible insight and warmth, author Scott Livingston guides readers down the path of healing as they learn to transform the “ashes” of negative interactions into something beautiful.
Replete with scriptural references, prophetic counsel, and poignant stories, Beauty for Ashes provides readers with incomparable guidance through the journey of Christlike forgiveness.
Are you a Bushel or a Candlestick?
by Eric D. Richards
Is there something you've always wanted to do but have been afraid to try? Everyone has unique talents and abilities, and the Lord can use each one, no matter how random it may be.
In this inspiring talk, Eric D. Richards shares a message that will motivate listeners to develop their talents so they can bless the lives of others. He says, “The Lord wants us to light the flame of our talent and place it on a candle and then invite the Lord to put it on a candlestick so it can give light to another person s life. As others look at us and see our good works, they will want to give glory to their Heavenly Father.”
With stories from the lives of outstanding Latter-day Saints who have “let their lights shine,” Brother Richards illustrates this message: “Your ability is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to God. You may feel invisible or inferior, but you are invaluable to Him.
Discover your gifts, let them shine, and watch how the Lord uses your talents to bless others around you.”
IN THE WILDS OF DEVON
by Wanda Luce
Lord Rupert Carrington, heir apparent to the Marquess of Lansdowne and former captain in His Majesty's Royal Navy, cannot forget the girl he loved in his youth, who died after he left to fight in the war against Napoleon.
Guilt-ridden, Rupert buries his regret by helping the London detectives of Bow Street take down criminals. But when Rupert ferrets out a ring of smugglers and is marked for death, the prince regent banishes him to a remote corner of England to live among the locals and be known only by his title of captain. Thus, Rupert will remain safe until the villains are arrested and brought to court, where he will offer testimony critical to their conviction.
On the first day of Rupert's exile to the wilds of Devon, he meets Alexandra Dancy, a beautiful country miss whose complex character and extraordinary courage stir in him a degree of affection and admiration he has not yet felt for any lady.
As fate or Providence would have it, Alexandra and her family, whose property backs his on the other side of a canal, have been hired to provide Rupert's meals and to care for his house and stables. When Ruper's friendship and warm attentions awaken Alexandra's heart, she suffers the torment of loving a man she believes is of a higher social class than he pretends, and therefore beyond her reach.
The impoverished Dancys hide their own aristocratic origins to protect a dark secret known to only one man Cecil Bedford, a blackguard of the first order, who wields a cruel power over Alexandra and her family.
Can Rupert save her from Bedford's clutches and topple the seemingly insurmountable barriers to winning her love and her hand?
My Review
I LOVE the regency romances coming out right now!
And this one has a FANTASTIC twist!
Instead of being set in high society, this story is set in quite the opposite-- hidden away to hide away "in the wilds of Devon" :)
But there is still the social class status, with lots of rules, and a smattering of bantering, and tight-kept secrets, and a controlling villain, and a mystery to be solved, and oh. the. romance.
A strong female character and a debonair gentleman--each with something to conceal--each finding friendship with the other--each afraid to act on their love.
Such a GREAT story!
LOVED it from the very first page to the very last word!
So want to read more from this author!
Do not miss out on this one!
Science Fictioned
SCIENCE FICTIONED
by Lee Falin, PhD
What do goblins, zombie viruses, inept magicians, and alien-invasion survivors have in common? They all make wonderful story elements for teaching about real science.
Science Fictioned takes ideas from cutting-edge, scientific research papers and turns them into science fiction and fantasy stories.
Learning science has never been this fun.
Author's Note
I was reading over the details of yet another extremely dull paper one day, trying to keep my colleagues from noticing the drool on my chin, when I realized that there was a better way -- what if every research paper was accompanied by a thrilling story?
I knew at once that this idea was nothing short of pure genius. Scientists would get their research out there, the public would have a better understanding of cutting-edge research, and scientific journals would sell like hotcakes. Everybody wins.
And thus, Science Fictioned was born: an entertaining collection of science fiction and fantasy short stories based on ideas from cutting-edge, peer-reviewed, scientific research articles.
Excerpt
Mice, Bacteria, and Golins
The Science--
Bacteria are a lot smarter than most people give them credit for. Granted, they do spend most of their short lifespans moving around aimlessly in search of good things to eat, responding to chemical signals from other members of their species, and occasionally ganging up on weaker creatures they encounter. Humans are obviously way more advanced than that.
It's common to think of bacteria as those nasty little buggers that make us sick when we accidentally forget to wash our hands before eating. However, many strains of bacteria floating around in the world don't make you sick at all. In fact, some of them can be quite beneficial to humans.
Bacteria that cause illness an disease are called "pathogenic" [path-OH-jinn-ick] bacteria...and they detect if there are enough of them around to survive (an) attack.
The Fiction--
Grog smiled to himself as he glanced up at the crescent moon. It was the perfect night for a hunt. There was just enough moonlight for a goblin to see by. They'd definitely have the advantage over the human scum this night. A light breeze rustled the corn stalks that surrounded him on all sides.
He couldn't see the farmhouse from here, not with so many stalks of corn, but he knew it wasn't far. If all went well, by this time tomorrow he and his clan would be dining on fresh-- a loud snap behind caused Grog to spin around.
He was just in time to see Smurg scramble to his feet, looking embarrassed.
"Quiet!" Grog hissed, glancing in the direction of the farmhouse. It was unlikely anyone had heard them at this distance, but you couldn't be too careful. Some humans were clever.
"It's not may fault," Smurg muttered as he squeezed noisily through two stalks of corn to join Grog. "It's dark and this ground is uneven."
Grog rolled his eyes. "Dark," he muttered. "What kind of goblin hunter can't see in the dark? That's what I want to know." Not for the first time, Grog wondered which of the seven cursed spirits was responsible for giving him the clumsiest goblin in the clan for a brother...
...Now be quiet so we don't miss the signal.
My Review
I received this book as part of The Summer Reading Trek 2015 from NewLDSFiction.com.
I had multiple books to choose from, yet this one captured my attention--I was intrigued with the idea of using fiction to explain science--I also noted a bit of humor from the author--
I was not disappointed! In fact I LOVED this book!
There are two parts to each section: The Science and then The Fiction
First you get a fun, fact-based run-down on the scientific explanation--so well written that even a child can understand and so entertaining that it sticks with you.
Then you get an intriguingly entertaining fiction story that further examples that specific scientific effect in action in everyday life.
WHAT A FUN READ!
Science has never been so entertaining :)
I am highly impressed with this concept and hope that the author continues the series!
About the Author
Lee first fell in love with science while watching old Star Trek episodes with his mother. After eventually completing a PhD in genetics, bioinformatics, and computational biology, he discovered that real science wasn't at all like Star Trek. One day he realized that he enjoyed the fiction part of science fiction quite a bit more than the science part.
His favorite books include any good science fiction or fantasy story he wouldn't be embarrassed to let his grandmother read, and anything written by Jane Austen. Lee's claims to fame include having served as the host for the Everyday Einstein podcast, making it to the final round of the Wheel of Fortune Teen Week tryouts, being a beekeeper, and winning the heart of the most amazing woman in the world.
Lee met his amazing wife while serving as a missionary in Brazil. They have five awesome children, and their family loves to travel around listening to great audio books. Lee's current goal is to one day learn how to load the dishwasher with competence. You can find out more about Lee on his website: http://LeeFalin.com
ANOTHER TIME FOR LOVE
by Lynne Larson
Salt Lake County, Present Day
Sam Carroll is living life in the fast lane--sleek cars, nice clothes, and lovely ladies have replaced the gospel values he grew up with, and he's going nowhere fast. But when a serious car accident brings his fun to a screeching halt, Sam is left comatose, aware only of his older brother reading aloud from the hundred-year-old journal of an LDS bishop, Moroni Chadester. As Sam drifts in and out of consciousness, the words begin to take root in his mind...
Alpine, Utah, 1915
Standing on a dusty mountain road, Sam is bewildered. The cars are different. The clothes are different. Where and when is he? The answer comes from an impossible source: Bishop Moroni Chadester. Hurtled back in time by forces he can't understand, Sam finds his memories of modern existence quickly fading as he becomes immersed in a new life and a romance with the town beauty, Laney Williams. But as the pair becomes entangled in a murder mystery, the thrill of courtship is replaced by terror as fate conspires to bring the couple into the path of a killer. Little do they realize that the clock is ticking on more than their lives Sam can't stay in the past forever. As danger looms ever closer, Sam must fight to save Laney. But can their love stand the test of time?
My Review
What an INCREDIBLE story line concept!
Fascinating! Intriguing! SO. LOVED IT!
Sam is in a coma from the car accident, but he can hear everything and understand most things. One day his brother comes in to read to him from a journal he is studying for his job.
But as the story in the journal progresses Sam finds himself not just listening to it, but living it...gone back in time without cell phones or electronic gadgets nor medical advances.
A murder has been committed and Sam is asked to help solve it...without modern detective tools.
How can Sam even start to begin to explain where he has come from and what he knows and what is in store for these people's descendants.
Talk about living a double life :)
LOVED. LOVED. LOVED. how this all came together!
Such GREAT writing!
An absolutely riveting read!
THE DIAMOND LOOKING GLASS
by Dorine White
Beauty and the Beast.
The world knows it as a cartoon with dancing teacups and broomsticks. To twelve year old Claire La Fleur, it is family history, and the power behind Belle’s mirror is real. Every ten years her family gathers to see if the mirror will awaken, and for the last two hundred years it has slept.
This time, Claire’s touch awakens the magic within the diamond looking glass, a direct portal to the past and a way to communicate with Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt. The lure of power brings with it many perils, and a betrayal close to home thrusts Claire into a treacherous underworld. To protect the mirror, she travels into the Louvre museum in the dark of night, searches abandoned subway tunnels, and walks the catacombs of the dead.
Welcome to Paris, France- where danger follows in every step.
FINDING SLEEPING BEAUTY
by Tarrah Montgomery
MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW...
In the meantime read her first book of
The Princess Chronicles ~ I'M NOT CINDERELLA
Chancing a closer look, I placed one foot on a packed-dirt floor of the kitchen. My other foot followed. I looked back at Cinderella - I mean Gabriella - who watched from the other side of the miraculous door. Behind her, I could still see the stacks of boxes in my grandmother's attic. Gazing into reality while standing in a fantasy was a pretty weird sensation.
Then, without warning, the door began to close. I scrambled to grab it, but something seemed to force it shut. Perhaps Gabriella, the supposedly sweet angel, had closed the door herself.
"Gabriella! Help me!"
Seventeen-year-old Brinlee is a modern girl living in Idaho. When she discovers a secret portal in her attic bedroom, she accidentally swaps places with the main character from her favorite fairy tale, cinderella. Lost in Cinderella's world, Brinlee threatens to ruin one of the world's greatest love stories. New mysteries surround the characters of the beloved tale, and Brinlee is determined to uncover the secrets. Once she entangles herself in the affairs of Cinderella's family and meets not one but two dashing men, can she keep this celebrated romance on track?
You'll love this fun reinvention of the classic Cinderella story.
Twenty-one-year-old Neka is a bit of an introvert, she also happens to be stunningly beautiful.
When she discovers her friend James is about to be dumped, she sees the perfect opportunity to escape from her quiet life. Can she summon the courage to leave it all behind?
James Copley comes from a ruthless family. It’s rubbed off. Years ago, he disengaged from his brother’s smear campaign, but now his father has offered him an ultimatum, “Get married or lose your seat at the table.” Plotting to stamp his design on the family business, he proposes to a woman, even though he doesn’t love her. But his carefully laid plans start to unravel when she leaves him on the day she’s due to meet his family. Could years of planning his comeback vanish with her departure?
A possible solution comes in an unexpected form: Neka. She’s not only a friend, but the daughter of his benefactor. And she’s right there, offering to support him. But will her support stretch to marriage? He attempts to win her over to his plan but collides with her powerful father who wants to leverage the situation for his own gain.
In their fight for survival and love, they are forced to face some uncomfortable truths.
Can they overcome thwarted dreams and missed chances to find true love, or does forcing destiny’s hand only lead to misery?
